Description:
This is the POST Approved BASIC FIREARMS INSTRUCTOR COURSE for LE personnel interested in becoming a POST Certified Firearms INSTRUCTOR. Upon completion of this course attendees should have the skills necessary to instruct officers. Completion of this course is required to obtain the POST Firearms Instructor endorsement. However, completion of this course does not guarantee the issuance of the Firearms High Liability endorsement. This course includes the 2024 curriculum changes made to the Firearms Instructor Program. Participants will conduct presentations, participate in group testing, technique demonstrations, and must pass key performance indicator testing which may include timed skills tests and entry and exit performance measures testing, such as a qualification course. Students will be required to run and sprint, assume low profile positions (kneeling, prone), shoot from unusual positions, and be able to work around barricades and other obstacles such as vehicles. THERE IS NO REMEDIAL TRAINING TIME. Students who fail any portion of the course will be dismissed and the full tuition cost will remain due; no refund or tuition rebate will be available.
Course Schedule
Week One-
Days 1-2: Classroom lecture covering human factors, coaching, feedback, and more
Days 3-4: Red Dot Sights (handgun mounted optics). Students without RDS will be encouraged to use their iron sights. Depending on course venue, some RDS mounted handguns may be available for loan.
Day 5: Entry qualification testing, basic skills instruction
Week Two-
Combat skills instruction
Range teach-back assignments
Night shooting
Integrated combative (close quarters, vehicles)
Exit testing, qualifications
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
-Students will be required to properly demonstrate basic handgun handling skills via qualification testing to include:
-Tactical and speed loading
-Shooting on the move
-Kneeling
Participants will be required to provide the following:2024 POST Handgun Required Equipment List
- Provide a copy of the Firearms Instructor Student pre-course checklist to the Range Master on the first day of class. Failure to present this document will result in dismissal from the course.
- Students should bring hard copies of the printed materials to class, however, they may store the materials electronically, however they must be able to access the material during the range portion of the course.
- Duty Handgun and complete duty belt
- Minimum of three magazines
- 1500 rounds of ammunition
- Body armor, Ear/eye pro
- Elbow & knee pads
- Ball cap
- Range suitable clothing, water
- Water
Additional requirements
-Be able to sprint and run with a handgun in a safe manner
-Be able to demonstrate prone and other unusual positions
-Successfully complete range and classroom teach-back assignments
-Demonstrate safe weapon handling and management
-Successfully complete daily quizzes or other assignments
-Pass all written testing and handgun proficiency testing
-Perform 100% of the physical requirements of this course. Injured students will not be permitted to attend or complete the course.
Pre-requisites for attendance-
- Idaho POST Basic certification
- 3 years of law enforcement experience
- Completed a 40 hour Instructor Development
- Completed the POST TACMED training or a TCCC training equivalent. Other medical training may be approved on a case-by-case basis
No remedial training will be provided. Students who fail the entry qualification will be dismissed from the course. The entry qualification test will occur after the classroom and Red Dot Sight (RDS) portion of the course. Students without a RDS may shoot with iron sights. Failure to meet minimal safety, qualification and performance requirements will result in dismissal from the course. Students will also be required to pass all demonstration testing and exit qualification testing. Failure to successfully complete the demonstration and exit qualification will result in the student failing the course

Completion of this course will satisfy the High Liability Firearms Instructor biennial training requirement for endorsement renewal.
