Description:
Sexual deviant behavior is “need” driven behavior. Sex offenders repeat their crimes because of this “need”. Therefore, there exists a high probability of additional victims. Officers investigating and interviewing persons committing sex crimes, including sexual homicides, must understand the nature of this “need” driven behavior in order to properly investigate and hold these sex offenders criminally responsible. The core objective of this course is not to gain insight or understanding about why sex offenders act out against victims to help or treat them, but to recognize and assess how sex offenders act out against the victims to identify, arrest, and convict them.
The following topics will be presented.
- Clinical Approach to Sexual Deviancy – Laypersons Understanding of Diagnosis and Intervention
- Defining Paraphilia and Associated Paraphilic Behaviors Sexual Deviancy – A Practitioner’s Understanding of the Role of Deviant Behavior in Violent Crime
- Fantasy Driven Behaviors – Isolative in Nature or a Behavioral Continuum
- Offender Dichotomies – Pedophiles and Child Molesters
- Search Warrant Applications – Affidavit Documentation in Support of the Execution of Search Warrants
- Behaviorally Based Interviewing – Utilization of Cognitive Approach Methodologies
- Vicarious Victimization – Psychological Protection of Investigators and Prosecutors
- Case Studies – Throughout the course of instruction, the participants will review actual criminal cases, view interview videos and participate in an interviewing exercises
