R2 227 BATI Cognitive Interview & Forensic Statement Analysis Training – Boise

July 8 – 12, 2024, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Credit Hours: 40
Course Number: R2 227

Description:

Topics Include:

  • Principles of Cognition
  • Techniques for encouraging V/W’s to provide additional information
  • Identifying if the writer/speaker was actually doing what he/she said at the time of the crime

Analyzing Written Statements The information in a written statement can possibly tell you the time the crime occurred, is the writer possibly your suspect, do they remove themselves from the story at the time of the crime, etc.  Written statements give investigators information on where to ask questions, even before the actual interview—such as places to look for evidence, time of crime, motive, or weapons used.

Cognitive InterviewsPast studies have shown that as much as 90% of additional information can be recovered using the Cognitive Interview Technique over “standard interviewing.”  This technique helps the person search their brain in different parts and remember information they could not initially recall.  This technique is being used more frequently amongst sexual assault investigations, traumatic incidents for victims, and officer involved shootings and pursuits.
