Description:

This course provides students with an understanding of new communication services, applications, technologies, and their impact to law enforcement investigations, as well as the resources the NDCAC has to offer to assist your investigations involving modern communications.

Topics include:
· Overview of the NDCAC’s mission, goals, and core responsibilities.
· Making Sense of Modern Communications in Investigations – Provides students with an introduction into new communication services, applications, technologies, and how they impact law enforcement investigations. The session includes an overview of the challenges these services present, as well as the capabilities available to law enforcement.
· Mobile Device Preservation and Internet of Things (IoT) Awareness – Provides students with information related to the search and seizure of mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices encountered at a crime scene.
· NDCAC Portal – Students are given a tour of the Portal and the information that is available including upcoming training, technical analysis of Apps and devices including White Papers, and contacts for a multitude of providers. An explanation of the free tools available to assist investigators in understanding and processing service provider returns is also provided.
· Investigative Scenario – Students will investigate a crime spree and using cell phone call detail records, as well as other information obtained through the investigation, identify suspects and link them to the crimes.
