Description:
Child Abuse and Sexual Assault investigations are the most common crimes against persons investigations in police work. By combining two topics, the student will discover similarities between adult and child sexual assault as well as key differences in those same investigations. This course focuses on the investigation of child and adult sexual as-saults, and the different investigative techniques for both. The student will learn to conduct all aspects of investigation: the victim, the offender, forensic evidence, investigative follow up, and working with the prosecutor. This course introduces the concepts of victimology, counter intuitive victim behaviors, grooming, corroboration, offender typology, and new victim interview techniques to get the most important information from the victim during their first interview. The student will also learn the subtle differences in “intimate partner“ “acquaintance” and “stranger” sexual assaults and the different between a “pedophile” and child molester. Attention will be paid to the value of crime scene and medical examinations, the value of forensic analysis, conducting the suspect interrogation, and how to work the “he said she said cases.” Atypical or “special offenders” such as: pedophiles, juveniles, and females are discussed and details on how a sex offender is formed.
