Course Description: Basic Traffic Crash Investigation

This course will provide you with the necessary skills, techniques, and information to conduct a thorough traffic crash investigation and properly document your findings for courtroom presentation. The course is also the first in a series of three needed to become an accident reconstructionist.
We will show you the proper procedures for photographing, measuring, and scale diagramming in order to record evidence and essential facts available from crash scenes. You will learn fundamentals of mathematics, physics and engineering as they pertain to crash investigation. You will be able to analyze the information gathered from the scene to determine what happened before, during, and after the collision.

- Physical roadway evidence
- Physical vehicle evidence
- Human elements and occupant kinematics
- Mathematic principles and equations
- Vehicle speeds and skid marks
- Scene documentation with photography
- Traffic templates
- Measuring and scale diagrams
- Roadside interviews
- Case analysis and court preparation
*This course fulfills the Idaho POST requirement for Basic Crash Investigation and is eligible for Idaho POST credit.
