SUMMARY:R2 407 2025 Keeping Children Safe Conference – Boise
DESCRIPTION:October 23 2025, 8:00am-4:40pm\nCredit hours: 8\nCourse number: R2 407\nDescription:\nMunchausen by Proxy Abuse (MBPA) is a hidden and often misunderstood form of child abuse in which a caregiver fabricates, exaggerates, or induces illness in another person—most often a child—for personal gain. Its complex nature, deep entanglement with medical systems, and lifelong consequences for survivors make it uniquely challenging for professionals to recognize and address.\nWe will discuss the history of Medical Child Abuse, how to recognize risk factors and historical red flags of Medical Child Abuse, understand the challenge of making the diagnosis of Medical Child Abuse, and recognize the risk to a child posed by Medical Child Abuse.\nWe will walk attendees through the investigative steps needed for CPS, Law Enforcement and forensic interviewers for complicated cases of Munchausen by proxy (medical child abuse). We will cover the importance of immediate contact and cooperation by CPS and law enforcement upon first report of this abuse to ensure evidence is not destroyed, effective suspect interview tactics for police and CPS, and the importance of a proper social media and electronic device investigation in these very different investigations of abuse.\nThis training provides an in-depth exploration of MBPA’s long-term impacts through the lived experience of an adult survivor. Attendees will learn how trust can be manipulated, how medical systems can be exploited, and why the resulting trauma is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Jordyn’s personal narrative will highlight patterns professionals should watch for, systemic gaps that enable harm, and the lasting effects on survivor–provider relationships.\nParticipants will gain practical strategies for identifying red flags, responding with trauma-informed care, and supporting survivors in ways that avoid retraumatization. The session will also introduce Munchausen Support, the only organization in the world dedicated exclusively to supporting those impacted by this abuse. This will also include a case study on The Hope Ybarra Investigation.\nInstructors: Det. Mike Weber, Alana Minton, Dr. Amy Barton & Jordyn Hope\nLocations:\nThe Riverside Hotel\n2900 W. Chinden Blvd\nBoise, Idaho 83714\nCost: Free\n(attendees are responsible for meals, travel, and/or lodging)\nRegistration Details:\nClick “registration now open” on website: https://www.idcartf.org/annual-conference ( https://www.idcartf.org/annual-conference )\nRemarks:\nLocal point of contact: Rayan Bertalotto (208)679-4545 or rbertalotto@heyburncity.org ( mailto:rbertalotto@heyburncity.org )\n \n \n
